Chapter 13

Seeing how things went started with heading to Destiny Darrington’s office to find out about her knowledge of Miles Preston.

Destiny’s office was open, surprisingly enough. It was a small frontage of a building downtown that butted up to a print shop in the back. From inside, you could smell the scent of ink and hear the whirring of machines.

Destiny’s secretary sat at a desk, her eyes red from crying, I could only assume, with a mountain of used tissues in front of her.

The woman must’ve been in her forties and sported a short pixie cut and sharp green eyes. She took one look at us, blew into a tissue and sniffled.

“Can I help you?” she asked.

“Yes, I’m Clementine Cooke.”

“Oh, Clementine. The last contract Destiny signed!” The woman collapsed onto her desk and started sobbing.

I shot Rufus a panicked look before going over and taking her by the shoulders. “I’m so sorry. Were you close to Destiny?”

She hiccupped and slowly straightened. “Yes, you could say that. We were…close friends.”

“I’m so sorry for your loss.”

“Thanks.” She tossed a tissue in the trash. “If you came to ask about the contract, it’s null and void with Destiny’s death.”

“That’s actually not why we’re here. This is my…colleague, Rufus Mayes.”

His brows arched at how I’d labeled him. But what was I supposed to say? This is my kind-of boyfriend, not really sure what he is because we’re taking our relationship slowly?

Nobody wanted to hear that. Trust me.

Luckily Rufus jumped right in. “We’re so sorry for your loss. But we were hoping you could help us.”

She shot him a skeptical look. “Help you, how? I’m Erin, by the way.”

“Erin”—Rufus smiled—“well, we’re here because Destiny was going to meet with Clementine the night she died.”

Erin tossed up her hands. “There’s no way that Destiny would’ve killed herself. She wouldn’t have done that. We had plans. So many plans.”

Erin collapsed into tears again. Maybe it hadn’t been a good idea to come here. I slowly rubbed her back. “I don’t think Destiny killed herself.”

She stopped crying, straightened and blinked. “You don’t?”

“No. When I spoke to her only about thirty minutes before finding her, I didn’t have any sense that she wanted to end things. None. Tuney Sluggs may think it was suicide, but not me.”

“That’s why we’re here,” Rufus confirmed. “To get to the truth. You see, Destiny was supposed to give Clementine some information.”

Erin’s eyes narrowed. “About what?”

“More like about whom,” I said. “Have you ever heard of Miles Preston? Is that a name you’re familiar with?”

Erin jutted out her lip in thought. “I’m not sure.”

Imperceptible to Erin, Rufus shot me a quick look. His expression was clear—he didn’t buy it. If Destiny and Erin were as close as she intimated, then why wouldn’t Erin have known about Miles?

“Well,” I said slowly, “he’s about yay tall, brown hair, tattoo on his wrist, has that sort of old-money Southern charm about him mixed with a little bit of danger.”

Rufus’s brows shot to the ceiling. I gave him a look that said, What? Rufus shrugged in response.
